Uttar Pradesh’s Mustafabad to be Renamed ‘Kabir Dham’: CM Yogi Adityanath
In a major announcement, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday declared that the town of Mustafabad in the Sant Kabir Nagar district will be renamed ‘Kabir Dham’ to honor the legacy of the 15th-century saint and poet Sant Kabir Das.
The Chief Minister made the announcement during his visit to Maghar, the place where Sant Kabir attained samadhi. Adityanath said the decision reflects the government’s commitment to preserving India’s spiritual heritage and recognizing the contributions of great saints who promoted harmony and truth.
“Sant Kabir’s teachings of unity, truth, and social reform continue to inspire generations. Renaming Mustafabad as Kabir Dham is a tribute to his life and message,” CM Adityanath said.
The move follows a series of similar renaming initiatives by the Uttar Pradesh government, aimed at restoring historical and cultural identities of cities and towns. Earlier, Allahabad was renamed Prayagraj and Faizabad district became Ayodhya.
Officials said the formal process for the name change has begun, and necessary approvals will be sought from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. Once cleared, the new name ‘Kabir Dham’ will officially replace Mustafabad in all government records and signage.
The announcement has drawn mixed reactions — while supporters hailed it as a step towards honoring Indian saints, critics argued that the state government should focus on infrastructure and development instead of symbolic changes.
