A collision involving a U.S.-operated vessel in the Pacific Ocean has resulted in two deaths and one survivor, according to U.S. authorities. The incident occurred during maritime operations in the Pacific, though officials have not released the precise location or the specific type of U.S. vessel involved, citing an ongoing investigation.
The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that it is leading the response and investigation into the incident. Emergency procedures were activated shortly after the collision was reported.
Officials said the U.S. vessel struck a smaller boat carrying three people. Two occupants of the smaller craft were killed in the collision. A third individual survived and was rescued from the water by response crews. The survivor received immediate medical assistance and was transported for further evaluation.
Authorities have not released the identities or nationalities of the victims. Officials said next-of-kin notifications are underway and declined to provide additional personal details while those procedures continue.
Search and rescue assets, including surface vessels and aerial units, were deployed following the collision. Investigators are reviewing weather and sea conditions, vessel speed, visibility, and compliance with international navigation rules at the time of the incident.
The Coast Guard said maritime incidents involving loss of life are classified as serious marine casualties and are subject to comprehensive investigation under U.S. and international maritime law.
A formal marine casualty investigation has been opened to determine the cause of the collision and whether any operational or procedural failures occurred. Investigators are expected to examine navigation data, crew statements, and vessel records. Officials emphasized that no conclusions have been reached and that the investigation remains active.
Maritime safety experts note that the Pacific Ocean is one of the world’s busiest regions for commercial shipping, fishing activity, and military operations. Collisions involving smaller boats often carry a high risk of fatalities due to the size disparity between vessels.
Authorities said further information will be released as the investigation progresses and once families of the victims have been fully notified.
