President Donald Trump could begin flying as early as this summer on a luxury wide-body jet donated by Qatar, according to U.S. officials familiar with the planning, as the administration explores interim solutions to long-running delays in the modernization of the presidential aircraft fleet.
The aircraft, a long-range Boeing jet configured for VIP travel, is undergoing extensive review and modification to meet the stringent requirements for presidential transport. Officials cautioned that no final decision has been made and that the timeline depends on the completion of security, communications, and defensive upgrades.
An Interim Aircraft Under Consideration
Administration officials describe the Qatar-donated jet as a temporary option rather than a permanent replacement for the current presidential aircraft. The move reflects frustration within the White House over delays to the next generation of Air Force One planes, which have faced repeated cost overruns and schedule setbacks.
Any aircraft used by the president must meet the same operational standards as Air Force One, including hardened communications, secure command-and-control capabilities, and advanced defensive systems. The jet would be operated by the United States Air Force once it is certified for presidential use.
Security and Technical Modifications
Defense and intelligence agencies are conducting comprehensive inspections of the aircraft, a process that typically involves stripping existing systems and rebuilding the interior to U.S. specifications. Officials say this work is complex and time-consuming, even for a modern aircraft already designed for VIP travel.
“Presidential transport is not about luxury alone,” a defense official said. “It is about survivability, secure communications, and the ability to govern under any circumstances.”
The modification process is expected to take several months, making a summer operational window possible but not guaranteed.
Legal and Ethical Scrutiny
The acceptance of a foreign-donated aircraft for presidential use has also prompted legal and ethics reviews. U.S. officials said any transfer would comply with federal law, with the aircraft becoming U.S. government property before entering service.
White House officials emphasized that the donation carries no policy conditions and does not alter U.S. positions in the Middle East.
Diplomatic Optics
Qatar is a key U.S. partner in the region, hosting significant American military assets and playing a role in regional diplomacy. Supporters of the arrangement say the donation reflects close bilateral ties and practical cooperation. Critics, however, have urged transparency to avoid any perception of foreign influence.
Administration officials say those concerns are being addressed through formal review processes and congressional briefings.
What Comes Next
If inspections and upgrades proceed on schedule, the aircraft could be cleared for limited presidential travel by mid-to-late summer, officials said. Until then, President Donald Trump will continue using existing aircraft assigned to presidential missions.
The plan highlights both the challenges facing the presidential aircraft modernization program and the unusual measures under consideration to ensure uninterrupted executive travel.
