India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who travelled to Dhaka to attend the last rites of senior Bangladeshi leader Khaleda Zia, on Tuesday personally handed over a letter from Narendra Modi to her son Tarique Rahman, officials said.

The gesture was described by diplomats as a mark of respect and continuity in India–Bangladesh relations at a moment of political sensitivity and personal loss for one of the country’s most influential families.

Message of Condolence and Respect

According to people familiar with the exchange, Prime Minister Modi’s letter conveyed condolences on the passing of Khaleda Zia and acknowledged her long and complex role in Bangladesh’s political history. The letter also reportedly reiterated India’s commitment to maintaining stable and constructive ties with Bangladesh, irrespective of internal political changes.

The External Affairs Ministry said Jaishankar met members of the Zia family on the sidelines of the funeral ceremonies and offered condolences on behalf of the Indian government and people.

“This was a personal and diplomatic gesture,” a senior official said. “It reflected India’s recognition of Khaleda Zia’s stature in Bangladesh’s public life and the importance New Delhi attaches to bilateral relations.”

Significance of the Visit

Jaishankar’s presence in Dhaka for the last rites was closely watched in political and diplomatic circles, given Khaleda Zia’s prominence as a two-time prime minister and longtime rival of the ruling Awami League. Her death marks the end of an era in Bangladeshi politics, one shaped by intense competition between major political dynasties.

Tarique Rahman, who leads the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) from abroad, received the letter during a brief interaction with the External Affairs Minister. Officials said the meeting was cordial and focused on conveying condolences rather than substantive political discussions.

India–Bangladesh Diplomatic Context

India has traditionally maintained relations with both major political currents in Bangladesh, even as it has worked closely with the current government in Dhaka on issues ranging from security cooperation to trade, connectivity, and regional stability.

Diplomats said the visit and the letter underscored New Delhi’s intent to keep channels of communication open across the political spectrum in Bangladesh, especially during periods of transition.

Funeral Amid Tight Security

Khaleda Zia’s last rites were held under heavy security in Dhaka, with senior political leaders, diplomats, and supporters in attendance. The ceremony drew large crowds, reflecting her enduring influence despite years of political and legal battles.

Bangladeshi authorities made extensive arrangements to manage the gathering, while foreign dignitaries paid their respects through official representatives or messages.

Looking Ahead

Observers say Khaleda Zia’s passing could reshape Bangladesh’s opposition politics, with increased focus on Tarique Rahman’s leadership and the future direction of the BNP. For India, maintaining engagement with all stakeholders remains a strategic priority, particularly as regional geopolitics evolve.

Jaishankar returned to India after completing his engagements in Dhaka, with officials emphasizing that the visit was strictly for condolence purposes.
