Himachal: Pilot Killed in Paragliding Accident at Bir Billing

Kangra (Himachal Pradesh) | December 28, 2025
By Vagabond News Desk

A paragliding pilot was killed on Saturday after an accident at Bir Billing, one of India’s most popular adventure tourism destinations, officials said.

The incident occurred during a routine flight when the paraglider reportedly lost control while approaching the landing zone at Billing. Local authorities said the pilot sustained critical injuries on impact and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

What Authorities Said

Police officials said preliminary findings suggest a hard landing, though the exact cause of the crash — including weather conditions, equipment failure, or pilot error — will be determined after a detailed inquiry.

“The matter is under investigation. Statements are being recorded and the equipment involved has been secured for examination,” a police officer said.

The identity of the pilot has not been officially released pending notification of family members.

Safety Checks and Tourism Impact

Following the accident, district authorities ordered a review of safety protocols at Bir Billing, including checks on weather advisories, equipment certification, and compliance with operational guidelines for commercial and solo flights.

Bir Billing, located in Kangra district, attracts thousands of domestic and international tourists each year and is considered among the world’s top paragliding sites. Accidents, though relatively rare, have previously prompted calls for stricter regulation and monitoring of adventure sports in the region.

Calls for Stricter Oversight

Adventure tourism operators and local groups have reiterated the need for tighter enforcement of safety norms, particularly during peak seasons when flight frequency increases.

Officials said further action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
