New Delhi, India — The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is advancing the development of the Astra Mark-2 air-to-air missile by incorporating key technologies from the Chinese PL-15E missile. This strategic move aims to bolster India’s indigenous capabilities in beyond-visual-range (BVR) air combat.

🔍 Technology Integration

DRDO has analyzed a recovered Chinese PL-15E missile, extracting insights into its miniature Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar and dual-pulse propulsion system. These components are being integrated into the Astra Mk-2 to enhance its range, accuracy, and maneuverability. The incorporation of a dual-pulse motor, similar to that used in the PL-15, enables more efficient fuel usage and improved mid-course cruising capabilities. (Indian Defence Research Wing)

📈 Enhanced Capabilities

The Astra Mk-2 is projected to achieve an operational range exceeding 200 kilometers, surpassing the initial 160 km design. This extended range positions the missile to rival advanced systems like the Chinese PL-15 and the U.S. AIM-120D AMRAAM, thereby strengthening India’s air combat deterrence. (CivilsDaily)

🛡️ Strategic Implications

The reverse engineering of the PL-15E missile underscores India’s commitment to enhancing its indigenous defense technologies. By assimilating advanced features from foreign systems, DRDO aims to develop a missile that meets the specific needs of the Indian Air Force, reducing dependency on imported weaponry and ensuring technological self-reliance.
