Delhi continued to reel under cold winter conditions on Wednesday as strong surface winds and persistent fog kept the maximum temperature well below normal, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue a yellow alert for the national capital.

The prolonged cold spell has intensified discomfort for residents, with biting winds compounding the chill, especially during early morning and late evening hours.

Day Temperatures Remain Subdued

According to IMD data, the maximum temperature in Delhi hovered several degrees below the seasonal average, while minimum temperatures also remained low due to clear skies and cold northerly winds.

Dense to moderate fog was reported across several parts of the city during the morning hours, reducing visibility and affecting road and rail movement.

β€œThe combination of strong winds and fog has suppressed day temperatures, leading to cold day conditions in parts of Delhi,” an IMD official said.

Yellow Alert Issued

The IMD issued a yellow alert, warning residents to be cautious as cold conditions are likely to persist. A yellow alert indicates potentially adverse weather that could cause discomfort and minor disruptions, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with respiratory ailments.

Meteorologists said wind speeds ranging between 10–20 kmph enhanced the wind chill effect, making temperatures feel colder than recorded.

Impact on Daily Life

The cold weather has led to a surge in the use of heaters and warm clothing, while homeless shelters across the city reported higher footfall. NGOs and civic agencies stepped up night shelter arrangements to protect vulnerable populations from the cold.

Traffic movement was slower in some areas during the morning due to low visibility, though no major disruptions were reported.

Weather Outlook

The IMD said cold conditions are expected to continue over the next couple of days, with fog likely during early morning hours. A marginal rise in temperatures may occur only after a change in wind pattern.

Residents have been advised to take precautions, limit exposure to cold winds, and follow weather advisories issued by authorities.

As winter tightens its grip on the capital, the IMD said it will continue to monitor conditions closely and update advisories as required.
