SOFTBALL: Lady Zebras erupt in fourth to rout Booker T. Washington

The sky cleared, and so did Claremore’s bats.

After Tuesday’s matchup against Booker T. Washington was postponed because of rain, the Lady Zebras made up for lost time with a 10-run fourth inning that blew open a tight district contest. By the end of the onslaught, Claremore had turned a narrow lead into a commanding 15-2 run-rule victory Wednesday at home in District 5A-4 play.

The Lady Zebras’ lineup was relentless, pounding out 18 hits on the night.

Tilly Andrews, Bella Weaver and Addison Reavis each recorded 3 hits, with Andrews and Riley Fay driving in 3 runs apiece. Alexis Morton and Claire Pilkington also chipped in multiple hits, while Fay and Reavis stole 2 bases each as part of Claremore’s 7 swipes.

In the circle, Amaeli Foster was sharp. The sophomore struck out 9 and didn’t allow an earned run in 4.2 innings of work, scattering 2 hits and 2 unearned runs before handing the ball over to the offense’s fireworks.

The Lady Zebras struck first in the opening inning when Reavis singled, advanced around the bases on miscues and scored on a heads-up hustle play. Moments later, Avery Hyde’s double padded the early momentum.

The Lady Hornets briefly pulled even in the second on a passed ball and then jumped ahead 2-1 in the third when Claire Bendure lined an RBI single after a Claremore error extended the inning.

That would be Booker T. Washington’s last highlight.

The Lady Zebras immediately answered with a 4-run bottom of the third. Weaver doubled and scored on Fay’s single, Reavis tripled home another run, Hyde drove in a third on a sacrifice fly and Andrews capped the rally with an RBI single to make it 5-2.

Then came the knockout blow.

In the fourth, Claremore sent 14 batters to the plate and piled on 10 runs.

Pilkington tagged up to score, Morton drove in two with a sharp single, Andrews and Schornick added RBI knocks, Pilkington came back up for a 2-run single and Fay closed the barrage with a 2-run base hit.

By the time the dust settled, the Lady Zebras held a 15-2 cushion.

Foster then closed the door in the fifth, striking out two more to seal the win.
