The Indian Army has intensified winter operations across forward areas in the Jammu region, stepping up surveillance, patrols, and logistical preparedness amid harsh weather conditions and heightened security concerns along the Line of Control (LoC), officials said on Saturday.
With temperatures dropping sharply and snowfall cutting off access to several high-altitude posts, Army units have reinforced forward deployments to prevent infiltration attempts that traditionally increase during the winter months.
Enhanced Surveillance and Patrols
Officials said troops have increased both day and night patrols in vulnerable sectors, supported by advanced surveillance equipment, including thermal imagers, ground sensors, and unmanned aerial systems.
“Winter has historically been used by hostile elements to exploit reduced visibility and difficult terrain,” an Army official said. “Our posture is proactive and preventive.”
Special emphasis has been placed on forested belts and traditional infiltration routes in districts adjoining the LoC.
Logistics and Cold-Weather Preparedness
The Army has also strengthened its logistics chain to ensure uninterrupted supply of rations, fuel, ammunition, and winter clothing to forward posts that become inaccessible by road during heavy snowfall.
Troops deployed in high-altitude areas have been equipped with upgraded cold-weather gear and heating systems, while medical teams have been placed on alert to deal with cold-related injuries.
Security Context
The heightened winter posture comes amid continued concerns over cross-border infiltration and ceasefire violations. Security officials say maintaining pressure during winter is critical to preventing militant movement ahead of the spring thaw.
Civil administration authorities in Jammu have also been coordinating with the Army to ensure civilian safety in border villages, including emergency evacuation plans in case of escalation.
Vigil Through the Winter
Army officials said the intensified operations will continue through the winter season, with a focus on domination of key terrain and rapid response capabilities.
“Our objective is clear,” the official said. “No hostile activity will be allowed to succeed, regardless of weather conditions.”
