An explosion at a gas substation operated by GAIL (India) Limited in Unnao triggered a gas leak on Wednesday, forcing authorities to halt traffic in the surrounding area and launch emergency containment measures, officials said.
The blast occurred in the morning hours at a GAIL installation linked to a major gas pipeline network supplying the region. While no fatalities were immediately reported, the incident caused panic among nearby residents and prompted a rapid response from police, fire services, and GAIL’s technical teams.
Emergency Response and Traffic Restrictions
District officials said traffic was suspended on key stretches near the substation as a precautionary measure to prevent ignition risks and ensure the safety of commuters. Police established a cordon around the site, diverting vehicles and restricting public movement until gas levels could be brought under control.
Fire tenders and emergency response units were deployed to the scene, while gas flow to the affected section was temporarily shut down. “Our first priority was isolating the leak and securing the area,” a senior district official said.
Authorities urged residents to remain indoors and avoid open flames in nearby localities until the situation stabilized.
GAIL Confirms Leak, Begins Technical Assessment
GAIL confirmed that an explosion at one of its substations led to a gas leak and said its engineers were working to assess the cause. The company stated that standard safety protocols were activated immediately after the incident, including pressure reduction and shutdown of the affected line.
“Gas flow to the impacted segment has been controlled, and a detailed technical inspection is underway,” a GAIL spokesperson said. The company added that it was coordinating closely with local administration and emergency services.
No Immediate Casualties, But Health Advisory Issued
Officials said there were no confirmed reports of serious injuries, though a few people complained of breathing discomfort and were advised medical evaluation. Local hospitals were alerted as a precaution.
Health authorities issued an advisory asking people in nearby areas to keep doors and windows closed and to report any symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, or shortness of breath.
Cause Under Investigation
Preliminary assessments suggest the explosion may have been caused by a technical fault at the substation, though officials cautioned that conclusions would only be drawn after a full investigation. GAIL is expected to submit a detailed report to district authorities and regulatory bodies.
The incident has renewed scrutiny of gas infrastructure safety, particularly in densely populated regions where pipeline networks pass close to residential and commercial zones.
Situation Under Control, Traffic to Resume Gradually
By afternoon, officials said the gas leak had been largely contained and air quality readings in the vicinity were improving. Traffic diversions are expected to be lifted in phases once safety clearances are completed.
District authorities assured residents that continuous monitoring would continue over the next 24 hours to rule out any residual risk.
