The Tripura government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the murder of a student, as authorities announced an increase in the reward for information leading to the arrest of the prime accused, officials said on Tuesday.
The move comes amid mounting public pressure and student protests demanding swift justice in the case, which has sparked widespread outrage across the northeastern state.
SIT Formed to Fast-Track Probe
Senior police officials said the SIT will be led by a high-ranking officer and will include investigators drawn from multiple units to ensure an independent and time-bound inquiry. The team has been tasked with re-examining evidence, tracking the accused, and identifying any lapses in the initial investigation.
“The SIT has been formed to ensure a thorough, transparent, and speedy investigation,” a senior official from the Tripura Police said. “No one involved will be spared, and the case will be taken to its logical conclusion.”
Reward for Accused Increased
In a parallel step aimed at accelerating the manhunt, police announced that the reward for information leading to the arrest of the main accused has been increased. Authorities did not disclose the new amount publicly but said it was significantly higher than the earlier figure.
Police have appealed to the public to share any credible leads, assuring confidentiality and protection for informants.
Case That Shook the State
The student was allegedly murdered earlier this month under circumstances that are still under investigation. While police have shared limited details, the incident has triggered anger among student groups and civil society organizations, who have accused authorities of moving too slowly in the initial stages.
Demonstrations were reported in parts of Agartala, with protesters demanding immediate arrests and strict punishment for those responsible. Some student bodies also called for greater safety measures on and around educational institutions.
Political and Public Reaction
Opposition parties seized on the incident to criticize the state government, accusing it of administrative failure and demanding accountability. In response, the government said the formation of the SIT and the enhanced reward underscore its commitment to justice.
“This government will not tolerate crimes against students,” a state official said. “The SIT has been empowered to act without interference.”
What Comes Next
The SIT is expected to submit periodic updates to senior authorities, while police continue search operations to apprehend the accused. Investigators are also examining possible motives, digital evidence, and the victim’s last known movements.
Legal experts say the outcome of the SIT probe will be closely watched, given public scrutiny and the sensitivity surrounding crimes involving students.
