A man has been arrested in Pilibhit after allegedly killing his younger brother during a dispute over ancestral land and concealing the body inside their house, police said on Friday.
According to the Uttar Pradesh Police, the incident occurred in a village under the jurisdiction of the Pilibhit district police limits. Investigators said an argument between the brothers escalated into violence, after which the accused allegedly killed the victim and hid the body within the house to avoid detection.
The crime came to light after family members and neighbors reported the younger brother missing for several days. Acting on suspicion and inconsistencies in the accused’s statements, police conducted a search of the house, where the body was recovered, officials said.
“The accused confessed during questioning that the murder was triggered by a long-running land dispute,” a senior police officer in Pilibhit said. “Efforts were made to conceal the crime, but sustained interrogation and local inputs led to the recovery.”
The names of both the accused and the victim have not been officially released, pending completion of legal formalities and notification of extended family members.
Police said forensic teams were called to the scene, and the body was sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause and time of death. Evidence collected from the house has been seized and will be presented in court.
Land disputes remain a frequent trigger for violent crime in rural parts of Uttar Pradesh, with police and legal experts repeatedly urging families to seek civil remedies rather than resorting to force.
The accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and was produced before a local court, which remanded him to judicial custody. Further investigation is ongoing.
