Police investigating the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie in Arizona announced Tuesday that DNA recovered from gloves found near her home has not matched any profiles in the national DNA database maintained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, marking a significant investigative setback, authorities said.
Evidence From Glove Fails to Yield Leads
Investigators recovered a black glove believed to be similar to the pair worn by the masked individual captured on surveillance video outside Guthrie’s Tucson-area home the night she vanished on Feb. 1. Forensic analysis of the glove produced a male DNA profile, which law enforcement officials submitted to the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System, known as CODIS, in hopes of identifying a match to a convicted offender or other known individual.
On Tuesday, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said that the DNA profile did not match any entries in the CODIS database. Additional DNA evidence recovered at the residence also yielded no matches. Investigators said they had hoped the glove sample might quickly link to a suspect but that the results so far have not provided a lead.
Authorities emphasized that CODIS is only one of several tools available and that investigators plan to explore additional avenues, including searching commercial genetic genealogy databases, which contain DNA profiles not included in CODIS.
Search Continues Amid Ongoing Investigation
The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie — mother of NBC “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie — is being treated by law enforcement as an apparent abduction. Surveillance footage released by the FBI shows a masked person, wearing gloves and carrying a backpack, on Guthrie’s front porch shortly before she disappeared.
Officials have stated that Guthrie was in frail health and reliant on daily medication at the time of her disappearance. They have also confirmed that her immediate family has been cleared as persons of interest in the case and are cooperating fully with investigators.
In addition to forensic analysis, search teams have been using technologies such as signal detection to locate potential clues in the area surrounding Guthrie’s residence, approximately two miles from where the gloves were found. Law enforcement continues to canvass neighborhoods, follow tips from members of the public, and pursue investigative leads.
Public Appeals and Next Steps
Authorities urged anyone with information related to the case to contact the FBI or the Pima County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation remains active, and law enforcement leaders have said they will continue to employ both traditional detective work and advanced forensic methods as the search enters its third week.
Officials have not announced any arrests or identified a suspect in the disappearance. A reward for information leading to Guthrie’s safe return or to an arrest remains in place as the case continues to draw national attention.
