4% of Assam Voters Marked for Deletion

Around four per cent of registered voters in Assam have been marked for deletion from the electoral rolls following a special verification drive, officials of the Election Commission of India said on Saturday.
The flagged names emerged during the ongoing revision of electoral rolls, a process that involves verification of voter details, removal of duplicate entries, and identification of ineligible voters, including those who have died, shifted permanently, or failed to meet statutory requirements.
Why Voters Were Flagged
Election officials said most deletions were proposed due to non-verification during door-to-door surveys, duplication of records, or migration outside the constituency. In some cases, voters were marked as untraceable at their registered addresses.
“The exercise is routine and aimed at maintaining the accuracy and integrity of electoral rolls,” a senior election official said, adding that no deletion would be final without due process.
Opportunity to Object
Under election rules, voters whose names have been marked for deletion will be given an opportunity to file claims and objections within a stipulated period. Names will be removed only after objections are examined and hearings, if required, are completed.
Officials stressed that the process is administrative and not linked to citizenship verification.
Political Reactions
The development triggered sharp reactions from opposition parties, which raised concerns over possible disenfranchisement, particularly in border districts and minority-dominated areas. They demanded transparency in the verification process and adequate safeguards to ensure that eligible voters are not excluded.
The state government and election authorities, however, maintained that the revision is being conducted strictly in accordance with guidelines issued by the Election Commission.
Next Steps
The final electoral rolls are expected to be published after completion of the claims and objections process. Election officials urged voters to check their status through official channels and submit necessary documents if their names have been flagged.
