Three hikers were found dead on Mount Baldy in Southern California, authorities said on Tuesday, marking another tragic incident in the rugged San Gabriel Mountains as winter conditions continue to pose serious risks to outdoor enthusiasts.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, search-and-rescue teams located the bodies during a coordinated operation after the hikers were reported missing. Officials confirmed that all three victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Search Operation on Mt. Baldy

Sheriff’s officials said the search began after concerned family members alerted authorities when the hikers failed to return from a planned outing. Ground teams, assisted by aerial units, scoured the steep and snow-covered terrain of Mt. Baldy, a popular but often dangerous destination during winter months.

The bodies were discovered in a remote section of the mountain, officials said, though precise details about their location and the exact circumstances surrounding their deaths were not immediately disclosed. Investigators are continuing to assess whether weather, terrain, or other factors contributed to the fatalities.

Dangerous Winter Conditions

Mt. Baldy, located east of Los Angeles, is known for rapidly changing weather, icy trails, and avalanche-prone slopes during winter. Despite its popularity among hikers and climbers, authorities have repeatedly warned that even experienced outdoors enthusiasts can be caught off guard by sudden storms, freezing temperatures, and limited visibility.

“Winter conditions in the San Gabriel Mountains can turn deadly very quickly,” a sheriff’s department spokesperson said, urging hikers to check forecasts, carry proper gear, and avoid high-risk routes when snow and ice are present.

Growing Concern for Hiker Safety

The deaths add to a growing list of rescues and fatalities in Southern California’s mountain ranges during the colder months. Search-and-rescue teams have responded to numerous calls involving lost, injured, or stranded hikers on Mt. Baldy and nearby peaks this season alone.

Local officials stressed that preparedness is critical. They advised hikers to inform others of their plans, carry emergency communication devices, and turn back if conditions worsen.

Investigation Ongoing

The sheriff’s department said the investigation remains active. Coroners will conduct examinations to determine the official causes of death, while deputies review available evidence, including weather data and the hikers’ intended routes.

Authorities said more information would be released as it becomes available.
